Dwayne Harapnuik has two sons and lives with his wife, Marilyn, in Abilene, Texas. Marilyn is also a graduate of the University of Alberta and holds a Bachelor of English degree. Dwayne and Marilyn met as students through a mutual acquaintance. From the moment Dwayne meet his future wife he knew that if he called this intriguing and amazing women a second time he was going to have to marry her—he called and Dwayne and Marilyn were married a year after they first met. While completing his MLIS and Ph.D. Dwayne and Marilyn became parents to Levi and Caleb and life has never been better.
There are additional facts about Dwayne that you will not find in his CV and that would doubtless surprise his students, but that are nonetheless true . . .
Dwayne was born in rural Alberta and it wasn’t until his elementary school days that his family had running water. A color TV wasn’t something that was seen until Dwayne was in his late teens. While growing up Dwayne was very athletic and played, hockey, basketball, volleyball, baseball and virtually every organized sport that he could find. This experience has served well and Dwayne has acted as his son’s Hockey and Soccer coach.
The Harapnuik boys (Dwayne included) latest athletic interest is downhill mountain biking. Dwayne and the boys have ridden the likes of Whistler, Fernie, SiverStar, Sun Peaks, Panorama, the North Shore and have spent countless hours at Calgary’s Olympic Park Mountain bike park. This discipline requires nerves of steal (or lack of common sense), extreme balance and strength and the best of equipment, so Dwayne and the boys are preparing their bikes and bodies for the upcoming season.
Dwayne loves music but despite taking piano lessons for many years really is much better at playing the stereo than any actual musical instrument. Fortunately, Dwayne’s love of music has been transferred to the boys and both Levi and Caleb play the guitar, drums and piano. The likes of Newsboys, Third, Day, Reliant K, FM Static, Creed, Kutless, Bruce Cockburn, Sheryl Crow and much more can be heard blaring from Dwayne’s office.
