Yesterday I did a post about cleaning bearings and somewhere along the line I needed to find out the difference between Ethyl Alcohol and Isopropyl Alcohol. This is what I found.
Ethyl alcohol is made with fermented and distilled grain. It is the active ingredient in alcoholic drinks. It depresses the central nervous system (the brain and nerves) and can cause death if taken in sufficient amounts.http://www.ehow.com/facts_7247218_isopropyl-alcohol-vs_-ethyl-alcohol.html
Isopropyl alcohol is made by combining water with propylene gas. It is completely unsafe to drink, and can cause blindness, severe gastric disturbance and death.
There is a chemical in Ethyl Alcohol that breaks down the grease and oil in the bearings and it isn’t in Isopropyl so we need Ethyl Alcohol. I thought there was no difference between the two so it’s a good thing I checked. We couldn’t find any Ethyl Alcohol strong enough so dad ordered some today.
