Ethyl Alcohol and Isopropyl Alcohol

Thursday, December 2nd, 2010

Yesterday I did a post about cleaning bearings and somewhere along the line I needed to find out the difference between Ethyl Alcohol and Isopropyl Alcohol. This is what I found.

Ethyl alcohol is made with fermented and distilled grain. It is the active ingredient in alcoholic drinks. It depresses the central nervous system (the brain and nerves) and can cause death if taken in sufficient amounts.http://www.ehow.com/facts_7247218_isopropyl-alcohol-vs_-ethyl-alcohol.html

Isopropyl alcohol is made by combining water with propylene gas. It is completely unsafe to drink, and can cause blindness, severe gastric disturbance and death.

There is a chemical in Ethyl Alcohol that breaks down the grease and oil in the bearings and it isn’t in Isopropyl so we need Ethyl Alcohol.  I thought there was no difference between the two 8-O so it’s a good thing I checked. We couldn’t find any Ethyl Alcohol strong enough so dad ordered some today.

Bearing Cleaner

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010
Levi, Dad, and I have been playing roller hockey outside all fall and our bearings are dirty. We bought some BSB Bearing Cleaner but it is not strong enough to clean grease out of high end bearings. It was okay at first but after a few washes it lost its acidity. It was supposed to be Eco friendly so it didn’t have much acidity. We need a stronger cleaner that works, that is cheap and that is easy to get.

Cleaners/solvents are liquids that dissolve and will interact with other liquids to achieve a specifically designed purpose. In some cases, the solvent solution will be employed as a cleaning agent. In other instances, the solvent will permeate a surface and provide a degree of protection. A solvent may also offer a degree of lubrication as well, although this type of solvent usually only lasts for a short period of time.

I have read that paint thinner, acetone and alcohol work the best and I am going to list the pros and cons of each.

Paint thinner:

Pros
1. It is strong enough to clean out grease.
2. It is easy to find in stores.
3. It is cheap.

Cons
1. It leaves a residue that over time will eat away at the bearings.

Acetone:

Pros

1. It dissolves grease.
2. It is easy to get.
3. Lots of people use it and say it is good.

Cons
1. It does leave a residue but not as bad as paint thinner.
2. CAUTION don’t get nail polish remover without looking at the ingredients to make sure that it is pure acetone.

Alcohol:

Pros
1. It works good and doesn’t leave a residue.
2. It is cheap.

Cons
1. It has to be 95% pure alcohol.
2. It is hard to find.

After all my research, I have found out that acetone or pure alcohol is the best and easiest to find. and other people agree with me that citrus cleaner is not strong enough. Paint thinner is not good because of the residue so we need to find some acetone or alcohol.

Rollerblades

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

The bearings in my rollerblades got dirty so I needed to clean them. This is the process:

I took the bearings out of the wheels.

I took them apart.

I put them on a little rack.

I put them in a little container filled with something like paint thinner. I waited a few minutes then took them out.

I took them off the rack

I blew them off with the air compressor.

I cleaned the extra dirt off.

I oiled them.

I put them back together.

I put them back into the wheels.

and put the wheels back on the rollerblades.

Hockey 10/18/2010 3rd game

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

At our hockey game last night we won 12 to 3. I scored 4 goals and got 3 assists and I only meant to get the first one because we were supposed to pass to the three little kids that haven’t got any goals. Near the end of the 2nd period our coach told us to not play that hard because we were whoopin’ them. It was fun but it confused the other team because we weren’t playing hard at all.

This is me on a breakaway

FIRST GOAL!!!!!!

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Last night at hockey, I scored my first goal!!!! I passed to the right winger at the red line off the face off. After that I went to the net. He brought it up and passed across and I shot it in. That made the score 4 to 3. The final score was 6 to 3 for us. We won that game. It was so exiting scoring my first goal.
