Summer Biking

Wednesday, August 1st, 2012

This summer we have been biking a lot. We were at Silver Star mountain for 3 weeks and then bike camp in the crows nest pass for a week. We still have Whistler and the North Shore to go. Silver star was a lot of fun, the first few days were really wet and slippery but that only lasted for a week. Four days into our biking I went into a bike camp with Thomas Vanderham, Kenny Smith and Matt Hunter. It was great, It went on for 5 days and I learned a lot. Levi couldn’t go because he had broken his coller bone a couple of weeks back. After the camp I went back to biking with dad. By that time Levi was ok to bike so we had a great time for the next two weeks. Sadly we had to leave Silver Star but we went on to our next destination, THE CROWS NEST PASS. We had a great time there, we played games, went on long hard bike rides played music went to Fernie and lots of other fun things. Sadly Levi re-broke his coller bone so our Whistler trip will be delayed till September.

The Auction

Saturday, June 2nd, 2012

Today Dad and I went to a vehicle auction at Salvage Salvage to look for a truck to buy for our summer vacation. They put out a catalog with all the vehicles with all their information and a number so you can get a look and see if there is anything interesting. There were two trucks we were interested in: the Nissan Tittan and the Ford F-150 XLT Eco-boost. We previewed a lot of vehicles to find out which one would be best for us. They have a big lot with all the vehicles and it is open during the day to wander through and look. Salvage Salvage keeps the keys so you can’t start the vehicles but you can look inside. The auction was held in two big rooms with wooden bleachers on one wall and a few nice vehicles inside. They had TVs in the room so you could see what you were bidding on. The auctioneer had a little room in the corner that was raised up so he could see people bidding.  The auction went all day and the two trucks that we wanted to bid on were near the end but we went for the whole day. We are going to start to buy and sell cars from auctions to make some money so we stayed for almost everything just to get an idea of how it works and how much people are willing to pay for vehicles. My uncle Darrell has been buying, fixing up and selling vehicles for a long time so he gave us a lot of advice. In the end we didn’t get anything because the bidding went too high. The Nissan went for $ 7.110 and the Ford went for $25.500. Salvage Salvage has a auction every two weeks so we might be able to find something soon. Hopefully, after doing this for a while I will have made enough money to buy and fix up a vehicle of my own.

Making Snow

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Today it is about -25 C and I took some boiling water out side and threw it up in the air. This is the result.

Christmas Lights

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

Today we put up our Christmas lights and it was really easy because we have a flat roof and a easy way to get on it. It was confusing what I had to do with the settings on the camera. I had to change the ISO settings, the shutter speed and the f – stop. In the end I got a really cool picture.

Future Predictions

Sunday, November 6th, 2011
In the magazine, The Futurist, in an insert called, “Outlook 2012: More Than 60 Forecasts For The Decade Ahead”, I found 6 different predictions that were interesting to me and that I thought were good ideas:
The Internet will automatically search itself so you don’t have to.
Enough geothermal energy to power the world.
The future is full of bicycles.
Gaming will help improve our ability to make decisions.
Ward off mosquitoes using the smell of their predators.
Watch out, St. Louis! The first prediction “The Internet will automatically search itself so you don’t have to” is a amazing idea that would be helpful, but it might be too complicated. I don’t think it it would be very accurate because it needs to anticipate what you want based on what you have searched before. What if you wanted to search something you never have searched before? It probably cant reed your mind so it probably cant think of the new thing you want to search.Dig very deep, and you will find enough geothermal energy to power the world. That is a great idea for getting energy and heat. Some people are already using it but I think more and more people are going to be using geothermal energy. It will lower the amount of energy needed from power plants and with less activity in power plants means less fumes going into the air and resulting with cleaner air.“The Future Is Full Of Bicycle’s” Is about more and more people using bikes or just walking to get places. That is a phenomenal idea because people would be getting exercise and getting where they need to be, at the same time. With less people driving there would be less accidents and less pollution

The prediction that gaming will help improve our ability to make decisions is a great idea because being able to make the right decisions quick is a great thing to be able to do. If what ever they are doing works, it will be a great tool for everyone to use.

Ward off mosquitoes using the smell of their predators. This prediction is about learning the smell of mosquitoes predator and releasing it in breeding areas. I don’t think that would work very well because then the mosquitoes would just go somewhere else. A other problem is If we have the predator’s sent and release it, will the predators of the mosquito’s predators start appearing?

The last prediction I chose is called “Watch out St Louis” It is about how St Louis is the most dangerous place because of all the ways natural disasters can occur in that area. They are on the New Madrid fault, the Mississippi river can flood and there is a massive amount of pollution. A other bad thing about St. Louis is that it has the highest crime rate of the USA. So when you go to St Louis you could be killed by a falling building caused by a earthquake, drown in a flood, choke to death from pollution and be stabbed all at the same time! Now I know where I’m not going to for vacation.

Over all the predictions the one that I thought was the most interesting (not the best) was using geothermal energy for heat because it has great potential and will cut down on pollution.

Galling

Thursday, September 29th, 2011

Galling (also known as cold welding) is when a new bolt is screwed in too fast and it wears off a protective coat on the threads. This causes the bolt and thread to fuse together. To prevent it, you apply anti-seize. Anti-seize is a greasy pasty substance with thin shard of metal mixed in. Applied on the bolts it will prevent the bolts from fusing with the threads.

Fork Replacement

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

This summer when we were biking in Colorado I wiped out and messed up my fork so we took it in to the bike shop. They said they could order the parts to fix it but it would take 4 or 5 days to get them in. We were only in Colorado for 3 weeks before we had to drive up to Canada so we didn’t want to lose any biking time. They had a fork that would work and we could either rent it for a few days or buy it. The cost of renting it was a lot and they could sell it to us for $600 cheaper than if we were to buy it from somewhere else. We needed something quickly so we bought the fork and when they were putting it on my bike they were telling us about maintenance on it. One of the things was that the bolts and stations were made out of titanium to make the fork lighter. One thing bad about Ti bolts is that they fuse (sometimes known as galling) to some metals and the only way to stop that is to put Ti Prep on them every once and a while. Ti Prep is just a fancy name for automotive anti-seize. You can get it at places like Canadian Tire and any automotive store. We are going to buy some soon and hopefully the bolts won’t be fused together.

This is the fork on my bike

Trampoline Bike

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

A few days ago we finished making our trampoline bike. We bought a bike frame similar to our urban bikes. We added a fork, head set and handle bars and put them together. Once we did that we covered the parts of the bike that could possibly rip the trampoline in foam and duck taped it all on. What we got is this:

Xbox :(

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

A few days ago I ordered a Xbox from the walmart site because it was cheaper. It was supposed to get here on Jan 29 or Feb 1 but then it snowed. I am so frustrated because the one day out of the year it snows and it delays my order. It is in Abilene and in a truck but the roads are too icy that it cant drop it off. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

this is the order

Xbox Argument

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

I have been wanting a Xbox for a few months and I have started researching game  boxes. Now I have to write a report/argumentative essay. The Xbox is not that exciting but the games are and the Xbox is one of the best ways to play my favorite games. I will be talking about the uses of game boxes like the Xbox 360 and the benefits of having one. I think the Harapnuik household needs a Xbox because the games I would play on it offers great entertainment value, it can help  in social settings and it can help us learn.

Entertainment is a big part of life and sometimes we get to stressed out and need some fun and games. Stress is what you feel when you have to handle more than you are used to and a good way to get rid of stress is to play games (unless the games get you more stressed out). Video games get you focused on something and you forget every thing else that is happening around you.

I like playing video games because they are like real life situations and you can control the environment and the way you play the game. There are lots of games for the Xbox and the ones that I find are the most fun are, Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Need For Speed and Call Of Duty Black Ops. It is also fun to have something to do when friends come over, that we are all interested in and that we can do for any amount of time. Depending on who the friend is, you can play the games that they like or are interested in.

A other big thing about having a Xbox is the social aspect of playing games. In games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 you can play online against other people anywhere in the world. You can also play with up to 4 people at the same time on the same screen. The number of people you have playing depends on how many controllers you have and the number of people who want to play.

There are a bunch of benefits of having a Xbox but most of them are just from the games. Since you need a Xbox to play the games I will talk about them. All games offer good eye hand coordination because you can’t be looking at the screen and the controller at the same time without messing up somehow. Some surgeons use video games to help train and to warm up their reactions.1 Pilots use flight simulators to train for flying.2 Some games offer great problem solving skills because you can try again if you fail and the games are so life-like that it feels like you are in the game. Since the Xbox has multilayer that you can collaborate with other people and create strategies and plays.

Xboxs, games and accessories cost quite a bit of money but everything together costs the same as a good gaming computer. There are 2 different kinds of Xboxs. The 4gb one, which is the lowest and cheapest one, costs $200 new and doesn’t have that much space to store games and save things. The second one is the 250gb one which is $300 and has all the room you need to store and save stuff. They have something called Kinect which is a motion tracker for games and you don’t need a controller. It costs about $150 and it can only be used on the new Xboxs. You can get a 85gb hard drive for the 4gb one but it costs around $90 so the 250gb one is a much better deal. The Xbox comes with one controller and extra ones are $40. Depending on the game and when it was released they can cost between $10 and $60 and old ones can be super cheap. To be able to play online you have to have a Xbox live acount which is $50 a year.3

Playing games on the Xbox is more reliable than playing the same games on a computer. The Xbox is meant for just playing games and things to do with them so there will be less Internet problems and crashes. The Xbox is made by Microsoft so anything can happen, but most things you can fix or get fixed. Xboxes last at least 4 or 5 years. Microsoft has made 3 or 4 different Xboxs. they made the first Xbox,

They made the Xbox 360,

and then they made the newest Xbox 360

and they just came out with the new Xbox 360 one before Christmas so there will not be a new one for at least 1 to 2 years.4

Now that I know the cost, I still think the Harapnuik household needs a Xbox because the the games I enjoy are better on the Xbox, it helps in social settings, it can help us learn and it is REALLY FUN!. I have been wanting a Xbox for a few months and this research paper should be good enough to show that I know what I’m talking about (most of the time).
