Skiing

Last night we went to Sun Ridge Ski Hill. It is on the river valley and small, but it is only 12 minutes away. At first I tried snowboarding and that was ok but harder than I expected. I changed to skis after a few minutes and then it got fun. I have skied a bit before so it only took me one run to get the hang of it and then it just got more and more fun, until they closed the hill down. We are planing on going again in a day or two and I can’t wait to get back on the hill.

Harapnuik Snow Days

The last two days, with only 3 1/2 inches of snow, Abilene is pretty much at a standstill. We went from 24C on Monday, to rain, thunder, lightening and hail in the evening to snow at 4 am. It’s a record snow fall for Feb. 1st and all schools were closed. ACU and universities as well. You gotta understand these roads and the ice and sleet and no snow tires, sand, salt or clearing of any road ways. I got stuck backing out of the garage because of a drift and Dwayne got out to the road in the van, turned around and came back. Same with today. Other than running out of milk, we are fine. I’ll deal with coffee and cream tomorrow instead of a latte. :)

Other than that, it’s business as usual. I almost finished painting the master bathroom before running out of paint and not able to get more, I will finish up the trim. The boys are still doing their full school schedule along with trips outside to re-live their childhood (Levi’s got some kinda fort going one) and Dwayne is as constant at his computer as a normal day. No day off for any of us, but no place to go and that’s always a nice thing. Church, dentist, small group all of it off the books. It doesn’t look like it will get any better (above freezing) before Saturday, so we may need to run down to the 7-11 a few blocks away to pick up the top dollar milk. The weekend looks like a warm 18C. Just thinking that Monday I was fixin’ to spread pre-immeragent weed killer. Ah, life in Texas.

I spoke with Kara in Dallas this morning and she’s off work as well. They didn’t get much snow but the rain and sleet has made it miserable. With rolling, organized power outages, it’s a much better situation than Senegal :) We haven’t lost power, though some in Abilene have been on the list. With more people at home running the heat, it’s a precaution.

Here’s to spring weather approaching (though not fast enough).

Snow? In Texas?

Yep, it snowed. A bit too much for my liking. We can’t even go to a friends house because there is too much snow and ice…. It snowed only 5 inches then the wind piled it up so we couldn’t get out of our driveway. Here are some pics.

Yes. I ride in the snow.

.....Doesn't always work though.

Sittin’ in the Morning Sun

You’d never guess it was -6C outside with the sun streaming into the room like it is. This cold snap has given everyone something to talk about, and we smile as Caleb runs out to Walmart with me for ice cream in his flip flops and tshirt. Child Protective Services may be giving us a visit. Caleb did say he wished he would have worn his shoes.

Continued List

What I miss about Canada:

Loonies and Toonies:
Reason: It takes a long time to plug in quarters for washing machines, dryers car washes, etc.

What I like about Abilene:
Only having to wash the car every 3 months-no mud, snow, slush, just the occasional dew, then dust collection.
Okay, this isn’t a list, it’s an explanation. The car wash bays are open, which is fine in the summer, fall, spring, but winter winds can make the car washing experience a bit chilly. Maybe I’ll wait till a warmer day next time, not 4C, or wear my gloves and jacket :)

Cold Cold

Today is  Dec 14 and I had just got back from the skate board park and I was really hot,  so I went swimming in our outdoor pool :-P Ha. But it was 51 F (10C) and the water felt like it was filled with ICE . I was only in the water for 3 seconds because I jumped in, felt how cold it was, swam as fast as I could to the edge,  got out of the water and we went home. I learned that you shouldn’t go swimming in December.:-)
